MotoGP: Alex Marquez claims maiden win in Spanish Grand Prix

    Published on

Alex Marquez claimed a memorable MotoGP win on Sunday as the Spaniard secured his maiden victory at the top level.

The 29-year-old won the Spanish Grand Prix in style to take the lead in the overall MotoGP standings after five rounds from his older brother, six-time world champion Marc Marquez.

The Ducati-Gresini rider came home clear of Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo, who held off Ducati-Lenovo’s Francesco Bagnaia for second place.

Quartararo, the 2021 world champion, started in pole position and secured his first Grand Prix podium since 2023.

Marc Marquez made contact with team-mate Bagnaia on a thrilling opening lap before sliding off on lap three.

The older Marquez, who won three of the first four rounds, battled back to finish in the points in 12th.

Alex Marquez started fourth on the grid and, after his brother’s mishap, forced his way past Bagnaia to move into second before making an aggressive move up the inside of Quartararo to take the lead on lap 11.

Marquez, who is in his sixth season in MotoGP and his third with Ducati-Gresini, gradually extended his lead to secure victory and go one point clear of his brother in the overall standings before the next race in France in two weeks.
